      ABSTRACT. Kaolinite, a 14 A o clay mineral, and illite were identified in 23 samples collected from five Carolina Bays in southern North Carolina. The 14 A o clay mineral does not have the characteristics of any of the usual 14 A o clay minerals and can with some justification be called expanded illite, vermiculite, chlorite, or montmorillonite.
